Substance Abuse and Family Education (SAFE)
Substance Abuse and Family Education (SAFE, Inc.) is located in Orlando, Florida.
The program is a direct descendant of Straight, Inc.- Orlando.
Straight-Orlando "closed" suddenly in the middle of the afternoon and by early evening
had been re-named SAFE, Inc.
Program officials sent a report to state licensing authorities
detailing changes they intended to make - changes that would supposedly differentiate themselves from Straight.
In our opinion, the only change SAFE made was moving to a new building.
In 1993 Florida authorities found 29 reports of restraint in 1 month at SAFE compared to just 1 reported restraint in all other district facilities combined.
The original executives, Michael Scaletta and Loretta Parrish, had both been executives at Straight-Orlando.
The current director, Brian Seeber, is a lawyer. He became involved with the program after a family member was admitted for treatment.
In a recent article in the Orlando Weekly, Mr. Seeber admitted to using treatment methods developed by infamous Straight, Inc. director Miller Newton.
In a phone interview with ISAC, Brian Seeber freely admitted that he has NO experience with juvenile drug rehabilitation.
Survivors of SAFE say the program is very similar to Straight, Inc.
Survivors also say the program administers large doses of Adderall to clients.
Medical records of one young man show
his dosage to be 6 times the normal adult dosage.
The pharmacist for SAFE has stated that the program uses so much Adderall "we have to special order it for them."
As a result of our investigation and subsequent report, SAFE is currently under investigation by 4 different Florida
agencies, including the Office of Inspector General.
The doctors involved with the facility are under investigation by the American Medical Association.
Walgreen's Pharmacy is conducting its own investigation as well.
Information regarding Straight, Inc. and Miller Newton is available on our archive page.
